The Power of Story
Children are natural storytellers and story-lovers. God knew this when He gave us His Word - a book full of incredible, life-changing stories!
As parents, we have the privilege of bringing these ancient stories to life for our kids, helping them see that the God of Abraham, Moses, and David is the same God who loves them today.
Our Favorite Bible Story Methods
1. Act It Out
We turn our living room into the Red Sea, Jericho, or the upper room. The kids LOVE acting out the stories!
Recent favorites:
- David and Goliath (couch cushions make great stones!)
- Noah's Ark (stuffed animals required)
- Feeding the 5,000 (snack time!)
2. Draw the Story
After reading, each child draws their favorite part. These drawings go into their "Bible Story Journal" - a growing collection of their faith journey.
3. Ask Wonder Questions
Instead of just reading, we pause to ask:
- "I wonder how Moses felt when he saw the burning bush?"
- "What would you have done if you were in the boat with the disciples?"
- "How do you think God felt about Zacchaeus?"
4. Connect to Today
We help the kids see how ancient stories apply to their lives:
- Daniel's courage → Standing up for what's right at school
- Ruth's loyalty → Being a good friend
- The Good Samaritan → Helping others even when it's hard
Our Weekly Bible Story Rhythm
Sunday: Read the story together from a children's Bible Monday-Wednesday: Act it out, draw it, or craft related to it Thursday: Discuss how it applies to our lives Friday: Review and share with extended family (video call with grandparents!)
Stories We're Working Through
We're currently going chronologically through the Bible:
- Creation
- Noah
- Abraham and Sarah
- Joseph
- Moses and the Exodus
- Joshua and the Promised Land
The Beautiful Impact
Last month, our 6-year-old was nervous about a new situation. Without prompting, they said, "Remember when God told Joshua to be strong and courageous? God is with me too!"
These stories aren't just ancient history - they're living, active truth that shapes how our children see God and the world.
Tips for Success
- Keep it age-appropriate - Use a children's Bible or simplify the language
- Be consistent - Same time/place helps build the habit
- Make it interactive - Kids remember what they DO
- Show your enthusiasm - Your excitement is contagious!
- Point to Jesus - Help them see how every story points to our Savior
What are your favorite Bible stories to share with your kids? We'd love to hear!
