Worship with Kids: Creating a Culture of Praise at Home

Authors

Worship is More Than Sunday

When we think of worship, we often picture a church service with a praise band. But worship is so much more - it's a lifestyle of recognizing God's worth and responding to His goodness.

We're learning to create a home environment where worship happens naturally throughout the week, not just on Sunday mornings.

Our Family Worship Practices

Morning Praise

We start many mornings with a simple worship song. Nothing fancy - often just one song played on our phone while we eat breakfast or get ready for the day.

Current favorites:

  • "Good Good Father"
  • "Great Are You Lord"
  • "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)"
  • "Build My Life"

Dance Parties for Jesus

Friday nights are often "worship dance parties" in our living room. We crank up upbeat worship songs and just celebrate God together!

The kids love it, and it's a beautiful picture of uninhibited praise.

Creating Our Own Songs

Sometimes the kids make up their own worship songs - they're simple, often repetitive, and absolutely precious to God's ears.

Last week's creation: "God made everything, everything, everything! God made the trees and the bees and me!"

Thankfulness Songs

At dinner, we sometimes sing our prayers instead of speaking them. Each person adds a verse about something they're thankful for.

It turns a routine prayer into a memorable moment of worship.

Teaching Them WHY We Worship

We help the kids understand that worship is:

  • Response to who God IS - He's worthy of our praise
  • Remembering what He's DONE - Recounting His faithfulness
  • Declaring what He's DOING - Recognizing His present work
  • Expressing our LOVE - Just like we sing to people we love

Age-Appropriate Worship

For toddlers:

  • Simple action songs
  • Clapping and dancing
  • Repetitive choruses

For elementary age:

  • Learning full worship songs
  • Understanding the meaning of lyrics
  • Leading family worship time

For pre-teens:

  • Exploring different worship styles
  • Discussing theology in worship songs
  • Playing instruments or singing harmonies

Worship Beyond Music

We remind the kids that worship includes:

  • Obeying God's commands
  • Serving others
  • Being kind and loving
  • Using our talents for His glory
  • Taking care of creation

The Fruit We're Seeing

Our kids now:

  • Request worship music in the car
  • Sing to God when they're scared or sad
  • Lead their own worship times
  • Recognize God's goodness in everyday moments

Starting Simple

You don't need musical talent or fancy equipment. Just:

  1. Pick one worship song
  2. Play it regularly
  3. Talk about the lyrics
  4. Let it become a family favorite

From there, watch how God grows a culture of worship in your home!
